Sony Rolls Out World's Smallest Full HD Camcorder Just in Time for Your Summer Vacation
SAN DIEGO, April 3, 2008 -- The new pocket-sized Sony HDR-TG1 Handycam(R)
camcorder's weighty high-definition capability will appeal to vacationers who
prefer to "travel light."
This diminutive camcorder weighs in at only ten ounces. It has an
ultra-portable body measuring just 1.3-inches wide by 4.7-inches tall by
2.5-inches deep.
It is a full-featured camcorder that can record 1920 x 1080 HD video and
4-megapixel digital photos directly to Sony Memory Stick PRO Duo(TM) or PRO Duo
Mark2 media cards. Its size and full recording capability makes it the world's
smallest full HD camcorder.
Another bonus for any traveler is the camcorder's durable titanium body and
premium hard coating that makes it highly resistant to scratches and quite
fashionable.
It ships with a supplied 4GB PRO Duo Mark2 media card so it's ready to go
straight out of the box and you don't have to make space in your travel bag for
extra discs or tapes.
"Sony was the first to introduce a travel-sized camcorder with 8 mm
technology in the 1980's, and it revolutionized the travel and electronics
industries," said Kelly Davis, director of camcorder marketing at Sony
Electronics. "This new model is a great example of our expertise in
miniaturization, as well as advanced imaging technologies with features like
face detection."
Face Detection for the Best Possible Picture
This new model incorporates face detection technology for both video and
still images, a technology also shared with select Sony Cyber-shot(R) digital
cameras. It can identify up to eight faces in the camcorder's 2.7-inch touch
panel LCD screen, and automatically adjust focus, exposure, color control for
natural-looking skin tones, and when photos are taken, flash control.
The model also allocates more encoding bits to a detected face during the
encoding process for the best possible picture when people are the subjects.
Not Just Another Pretty Face
The camcorder features advanced video and audio technologies with simple,
intuitive operation. It is equipped with a high-quality Carl Zeiss(R)
Vario-Tessar(R) 10x optical zoom lens and 2-megapixel ClearVid(TM) CMOS sensor
with Exmor(TM)-derived technology, engineered to minimize picture noise.
The camera's BIONZ(TM) processing engine also features noise reduction
capabilities in addition to fast processing speeds. This engine powers the
model's dynamic range optimization feature, which automatically adjusts under-
or over-exposed areas in a picture. These technologies together produce
high-resolution video and photos with natural color reproduction and rich
details.
Audio is recorded in Dolby(R) Digital 5.1-channel surround sound and features
a built-in zoom microphone, delivering clear recordings of your subjects along
with the video.
Designed to be the perfect travel companion, the HDR-TG1 camcorder will ship
with supplied accessories in May for about $900. There is also an optional
travel kit (Sony ACC-TCH5) that includes a battery, travel charger and pouch for
about $100. Plus, there is a custom-fit case (Sony LCM-TGA) with brushed metal
accents available as an accessory for about $50.
All can be purchased, along with other accessory options, direct at
sonystyle.com, at Sony Style(R) retail stores (sonystyle.com/retail), at
authorized dealers nationwide, and at military base exchanges. Pre-orders begin

Sony High-Definition Cameras Named to Starting Team for NFL Championship Game
More than 30 Cameras - Sony HDC-3300 and HDC-1500 - to Capture On-field and In-Studio Action for the Big Game
-- More than 30 Sony high-definition cameras will be used by Game Creek Video, the mobile production company supporting the Fox Sports broadcast this weekend of the NFL championship game between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. They include a combination of Sony's HDC-1500 multi-format cameras and HDC-3300 3x slow-motion cameras.
The cameras will be used for pre-game, game and in-studio programming.
A total of 27 HDC-1500 cameras will serve as the primary field-production units, supported by four HDC-3300 systems. Two of these "slow-motion" systems will be placed in each end zone, while the other two will be used as free-roaming hand-held units.
Game Creek's president Pat Sullivan is very familiar with Sony's professional cameras, having used them previously for several high-profile live events, including the NBA Finals, Major League Baseball's All Star Game and World Series, and NASCAR's Daytona 500 and other FOX Sports NASCAR events, as well as NFL regular season and playoff games on FOX Sports.
"This is the 'big game' and it is the most watched television event in the world, so we're not taking any chances," Sullivan said. "We're confident that Sony's camera systems will perform memorably for us again at the big game this year, bringing viewers at home one of the best and most immersive high-definition championship game broadcasts they've ever seen. Our track record of success with these HD cameras and their spectacular image quality are a big part of why we're bringing them to Arizona."
Game Creek will support the game with its FX HD mobile production system, which comprises five integrated production, support, and studio trailers. The company will also be using Sony HD technology for the upcoming Daytona 500 NASCAR event.
Sony's HDC-1500 multi-format camera system is capable of capturing high-definition images in either 1080i or 720P, making it the ideal system for a range of sports broadcasts and other high-end content creation applications, as well as production companies that need to handle both types of high-definition signal formats.
The HDC-3300 camera achieves 3x speed slow motion effects in full HD resolution. Designed for use by OB vans and production or rental houses, the new system can output normal speed signals simultaneously for live feeds through separate digital signal processing.

Sony High-Definition Options and Digital Video Production Headline Sundance Film Festival
HD Technologies - New XDCAM EX and HDV Camcorders - Offer Unique Benefits for Independent Production
-- Digital video production and Sony high-definition solutions are co-headliners at this year's Sundance Film Festival.
More than half of this year's festival entries were shot digitally, with many of those originated in a Sony HD video format. In addition, each of the Sundance screening venues is equipped for digital playback in the company's HDCAM(R) format.
"Sony has championed video production for moviemakers, first from analog to digital, and then from standard- to high-definition technology," said Ian Calderon, director of digital initiatives for The Sundance Institute. "The independent community continues to embrace the creative and economic advantages of shooting and recording digitally.
"With Sony's recent introductions of its HDV and XDCAM HD(TM) systems, bringing high-end capabilities down to more affordable costs, I expect to see many more independent HD features in the coming years."
At the festival's "New Frontier on Main" technology exhibit, Sony is highlighting its lineup of "affordable HD" formats that offer movie-makers a range of production options for telling their stories more creatively and effectively. These include Sony's XDCAM EX PMW-EX1 solid-state memory camcorder, and its newest HDV(TM) camcorders, models HVR-Z7U and HVR-S270U.
Each camcorder can offer specific benefits for the independent shooter.
The new PMW-EX1 camcorder records and stores content to ExpressCard(TM) high-speed media technology, using Sony's newly developed SxS PRO(TM) solid-state memory as its recording medium. The camcorder also offers selectable bit rates as well as editing and effects capabilities suited to independent production.
Its 1/2-inch type image sensor can capture images with a shallower depth of field than other hand-held camcorders' smaller-size image sensors, and the low-light capabilities of this sensor are helpful to professionals such as documentary makers who often need to capture footage in challenging lighting applications.
Other features include "Slow and Quick Motion" capability -- also commonly known as "over-cranking" and "under-cranking" -- for creating unique "looks" or special effects of slow and fast motion, and Slow Shutter and Interval Recording.
Sony's two new HDV camcorders feature interchangeable lens systems, native progressive recording, increased sensitivity for low-light conditions and hybrid solid-state recording to professional videotape and CompactFlash(R) memory cards.
Sony will highlight its professional media products that complement the camcorders designed for independent video work.
At Sundance, Sony is also conducting free workshops targeted towards digital movie-makers. Veteran director/cameraman Jody Eldred will conduct four presentations on creative shooting techniques using the XDCAM EX camcorder, showing recent footage he shot using the new camera.
Since digital technology first appeared at Sundance in the mid-'90s, there has been a steady evolution toward digital throughout the independent production community.
"It's clear that the digital and HD revolutions have made their marks in the world of independent cinematography," said Paul Foschino, senior marketing manager for professional video and audio at Sony Electronics.
