iPod Ownership Shows No Sign of Stopping, According to Jacobs Media Poll

Attention Steve Jobs: iPod owners want an FM tuner in their next nano

The results of a new web poll survey, conducted by Rock radio consultants Jacobs Media, shows that iPod/personal mp3 player growth continues to be impressive. But iPod owners -- in particular -- want an FM radio in that next nano or Shuffle.

The study was conducted in late February through early March, and consisted of more than 25,000 respondents from over 69 Rock-formatted stations from all over the U.S.

"iPods are showing no signs of stopping," according to Fred Jacobs, President of Jacobs Media. "Last year, our data showed that the growth of personal mp3 players was far from over. This year, our new study confirms that this phenomenon continues to have lots of life, and we expect strong growth throughout '07."

Since this poll was started in February '05, year-to-year personal mp3 player penetration has steadily increased. From the '06 to '07 studies, ownership is up to 47% of the Rock sample, an impressive jump of 34%. And among Alternative listeners, two-thirds (67%) now own an iPod-like device.

The study asked those who still don't own one of these devices if they intend to do so in 2007. Nearly half (45%) of these iPod-less respondents say they are very or somewhat likely to take the plunge. One in ten (12%) has a strong likelihood to buy one sometime during 2007. It should be another great year for Apple and other personal mp3 player manufacturers.

The study asked about the most important new feature that consumers desire in their next personal mp3 player. Overwhelmingly, these respondents want an FM tuner (33%). That feature outpaces increased capacity, a larger screen, and video playback in importance. It is noteworthy that Apple owners are especially desirous of being able to receive FM radio in their next iPods. In fact, more than four in ten (43%) make this choice.

To download the full report, go to http://www.jacobsmedia.com/tech3_ipod.htm.

Jacobs Media's Technology Web Poll III is the largest study of its kind, conducted in late February/early March 2007, among more than 25,000 respondents across 69 different Rock-formatted stations. It is the third annual Technology Poll, conducted among Rock radio listeners who are predominantly members of station email clubs. Participating stations represent Mainstream/Active Rock, Classic Rock, Alternative, and Triple A outlets in markets around the U.S.

Of course, this is a web poll, and cannot replicate all radio listeners or even all Rock radio listeners. As with all Internet-based research projects of this kind, the results reflect only those who chose to participate in the survey, and do not necessarily represent the views of all Rock radio listeners in the country. Still, the 69 radio stations that invited their listeners to take the survey are a broad cross-section of Rock stations, from large and small markets, as well as those that play the newest Rock music and those that play only Classic Rock.

Jacobs Media is the largest Rock radio consulting firm in America, providing research and consulting services to major radio broadcasting companies. The company created the Classic Rock format, and works with Alternative, Active Rock, and Triple A formatted stations.

LA Opera Presents Beloved Operetta by Franz Lehár
The Merry Widow
Starring Mezzo-Soprano Susan Graham and Baritone Rod Gilfry
April 28 – May 26, 2007

(LOS ANGELES, CA) April 2007 – Plácido Domingo has announced that LA Opera will present Franz Lehár’s fin-de-siècle masterpiece, The Merry Widow, starring mezzo-soprano Susan Graham and baritone Rod Gilfry. The opulent production will be conducted by Sebastian Lang-Lessing and directed by Lotfi Mansouri. The dazzling costumes reflecting turn of the 20th century Paris are designed by Thierry Bosquet; Art Nouveau inspired sets are by Michael Yeargan; the lighting is designed by M.L. Geiger; and finally the choreography that includes the operetta’s magnificent waltzes is by Peggy Hickey. The Merry Widow opens Saturday, April 28 and runs for nine performances through May 26, 2007, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 135 North Grand Avenue, Los Angeles.

Following a mesmerizing LA Opera stage debut in L’incoronazione di Poppea, Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Susan Graham returns to star as Anna Glawari opposite Grammy Award nominated baritone and Los Angeles favorite Rod Gilfry as Count Danilo. The cast also includes soprano Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz as Valencienne, tenor Eric Cutler as Camille de Rosillon, tenor Greg Fedderly as Raoul de St. Brioche, tenor Jason Graae as Njegus and baritone Jake Gardner as Baron Mirko Zeta.

This ravishing Viennese operetta entertains audiences with a classic love story still relevant a century after its debut: a wealthy widow frets to find true love with a man invested in more than her fortune. The production opens at a soiree for Parisian high society hosted by Baron Mirko Zeta, the Pontevedrian Ambadassor. Anxious Parisian suitors await the arrival of the wealthy and eligible Pontevedrian widow Anna Glawari. The Baron hopes to keep her heart and her wealth entwined with his own country’s most eligible bachelor, Count Danilo. Anna runs into Danilo at the party, and the two reminisce about their former romance. With ulterior motives in mind, friends of both Anna and Danilo attempt to persuade them to marry. Anna, adamant on finding true love, tests Danilo’s heart. In a joyful reunion, the couple waltzes to a very happy ending.

While The Merry Widow is firmly established in the world’s operatic repertoire, it also has been adapted for the stage and for Hollywood film. The production debuted as operetta in 1905 at the Theater an der Wien, on the stage as a musical in 1907 at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York and finally as a Hollywood silent film in 1925, produced by MGM and starring Mae Murray and John Gilbert. It was remade for film in 1952 starring Lana Turner and Fernando Llamas, and the work was even nominated for Oscars for Set Design and Costume.

A San Francisco Opera production, The Merry Widow will open on Saturday, April 28, 2007, at 7:30pm. Subsequent Evening Performances are May 3, 9, 12, 23 and 26 at 7:30 PM and May 20 at 8:00pm. Matinee Performances are May 6 at 2:00pm and May 19 at 1:00pm.

Kimberlea Daggy speaks on the production at the pre-performance lectures, which begin one hour prior to each performance. Ms. Daggy has been a radio host for classical music stations since 2001; She can be heard on weekday mornings on KUSC 91.5 FM.

Tickets to The Merry Widow range from $35 to $220. Single tickets are now on sale at the Los Angeles Opera Box Office, online at www.LAOpera.com, or by phone at (213) 972-8001. All performances take place at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Music Center, 135 North Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90012.

The No Complaint Challenge

Can you make it twenty one days without complaining?

If you can keep the purple Complaint Free Bracelet on the same wrist for 21 days, you’ve accomplished what many around the world are trying to do. As of this writing, 3,481,467 Complaint Free Bracelets have been ordered and sent to over 80 countries around the world.

The Complaint Free Bracelets, initially started by Rev. Will Bowen of Christ Church Unity in Kansas City, Missouri when he had heard enough with the whining of his congregation. Showing his seriousness in creating a complaint free environment, he passed out purple bracelet and challenged them in a sermon to habit of gratitude and twenty-one days without complaint.

As a reminder of commitment and pledge, a purple Complaint Free Bracelet is worn around your wrist. If you catch yourself complaining, move the bracelet to the other wrist. If you notice someone else complain, and complain about it before they move the bracelet to their other wrist, then you move yours, as you’re the one doing the complaining. If you’re curious if you’re commenting or complaining, Rev. Bowen the difference shares, “If you putting a lot of energy into it, you’re complaining.” Much has to do with your feelings about the issue, whether a matter of fact, or harping.

How easy is it to do this? Rev. Bowen, leading by example for his congregation, took 3-1\2 months to reach the magic habit changing 21 days.

Complaint Free Bracelets are yours for the asking. As an effort to raise consciousness, they are shipped free and are available from the Christ Church of Unity at www.acomplaintfreeworld.org. The program is staffed by volunteers and supported by donations.

Due to the high volume of requests, after being mentioned on Oprah, People Magazine and “The Today Show” amongst many media, it may take 3-5 weeks. I’ve placed my order, but before you like I, think this is a hall pass for procrastination, practice makes perfect. Thus far, I’ve managed to be complaint free since discovery and the writing of this article.

After accomplishing 21 consecutive days without complaining, according to their site, your life is expected to be happier, more loving, positive and abundant. Can eliminating complaining make one happier? Happiness, yes, is a matter of choice. If life brings to you what you focus upon, then it is all a matter of focus.

Brody Dalle Announces Formation of New Band Entitled Spinnerette

The Distillers' Frontwoman to Begin Recording Spinnerette's Debut Album in Summer of 2007

Brody Dalle -- known as the lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist for punk band The Distillers -- has formed a new band called Spinnerette, which will begin recording their debut album in Los Angeles in 2007. Alain Johannes, who has worked with rock luminaries such as PJ Harvey, Eagles of Death Metal, Chris Cornell, and No Doubt, will produce and play on the album.

After the release and touring cycle of The Distillers' third album and debut for Sire Records, "Coral Fang," Dalle had written a batch of songs with plans to go back into the studio to record them for a future release. "But," Dalle reflects, "the songs seemed out of context and inappropriate for The Distillers. I felt ambivalent about sharing them with anyone."

In 2005, Dalle became pregnant with her first child with husband and Queens of the Stone Age's frontman Joshua Homme. After the birth of daughter Camille, Dalle is now excited to get back into the writing and recording process for Spinnerette. "Music is so much a part of who I am at my core," she says. "I had been storing so many ideas, soaking up everything like a sponge. Now I'm working on some of the most articulate music and lyrics I've written."

In addition to Dalle and Johannes, Tony Bevilacqua (The Distillers) is also a member of Spinnerette. Dalle calls the new group "a band of gypsies" that she will not entertain comparisons to The Distillers. "Spinnerette gets a clean slate," Dalle insists. "She gets to start over and be the new kid in town, only she ain't no kid. She's quirky and sexy and she f***s around." Dalle will say that the Distillers do still exist, "just not as you know it."

So why create a new band? "I've evolved," she explains. "And musically speaking, there are other ways to get your point across. Before I had a baby, I felt 13 years old emotionally, constantly tortured by my own reactionary behavior. It's impossible for one to stay in this state and offer the world something more. I ain't no teenage girl -- have you seen my a**? It ain't waif-ish!"

The University of Applied Sciences at Furtwangen recently initiated its decision to create a virtual reality laboratory in

which Media Lab students could create real-world strategies in a three dimensional environment. Innovative for its use of current technology to create an engaging virtual reality, the laboratory offers a training and experimental environment in which all possible facets of a project may be explored before students proceed with the best solution. Implemented by SDI GmbH in Munich, the lab uses strategically placed high definition video projection supplemented by wave field synthesis loudspeakers located around the circumference of the lab. Connectivity equipment supplied by Gefen ensured the delivery of high definition visuals with no latency period. "The technical basis for the visual distribution is the use of six projectors located in a hinged installation, each beaming high definition images on a massive rear projection screen," explained Thorsten Goecke, SDI product manager. "By polarizing the various projections, the presentation appears absolutely three-dimensional as life-size imagery flashes across the screen." To distribute the data required for high definition video, SDI relied on an assortment of Gefen HDTV extenders and splitters to deliver simultaneous imagery throughout the lab. Gefen's fiber optics cabling was installed to ensure an unadulterated distribution of all video signals. To compliment the video, SDI installed loudspeakers in circumferential alignment, conveying an auditory authenticity for research and teaching at the highest level. A high resolution image of the Media Lab is located here: http://forum.gefen.com/linda/IMG-Furtwangen.jpg # # # About SDI GmbH: Success through competence – this is SDI.  In keeping with current trends of “retro” products like pre-distressed jeans, “vintage-treated” guitars, and “antiqued” violins, Lectrosonics has introduced the Heritage Series belt-pack transmitters for guitar and bass players interested in vintage-looking equipment without the headaches of vintage performance. Following Gibson and Fender's cue with their classic reissues which offer realistic wear and authentic finish blemishes, Lectrosonics offers a companion transmitter to complement the visual effect that so many artists are seeking.

Following Gibson and Fender's cue with their classic reissues which offer realistic wear and authentic finish blemishes, Lectrosonics offers a companion transmitter to complement the visual effect that so many artists are seeking.

"With the Heritage Series, you get a brand-new transmitter which works flawlessly, inside a case which has been artificially aged—complete with finish wear and tear—as though the transmitter could have been used by Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock," says Karl Winkler, director of business development at Lectrosonics. Before final assembly, each case is carefully tumbled in a drum with gravel and assorted 1970’s belt buckles to achieve the "classic" look. They are then expertly hand-distressed to complete the effect.

The Heritage Series transmitters carry a $2,500 surcharge over the standard transmitter prices. Availability: April 1, 2007.
