NAMM AND SESAME WORKSHOP TO CELEBRATE A WORLD OF MAKING MUSIC WITH 2008 ROSE PARADE FLOAT

NAMM Float To Feature Diverse Family of International ‘Sesame Street’ Characters Bringing the Joys of Playing Music Into Viewers’ Homes All Over the World

CARLSBAD, Calif., Oct. 9, 2007—NAMM, the trade association of the international music products industry, today announced it has once again teamed with Sesame Workshop to produce its float entry in the 119th Tournament of Roses Parade.

This year’s float will feature an international family of “Sesame Street” characters showcasing music as the ultimate expression of celebration for all cultures and representing the importance of making music as part of a complete education for all children. “Sesame Street” has been a long-time advocate for integrating music into its program to help children viewers learn and grow.

The 2008 Rose Parade, featuring the theme “Passport to the World’s Celebrations,” will take place New Years Day on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, with millions of people around the world expected to watch.

The NAMM float is themed “Passport to the World of Making Music,” and will feature “Sesame Street” celebrity Bob McGrath, an original cast member of “Sesame Street” who plays the music teacher on the show. McGrath is an accomplished singer with seven children’s albums to his credit. He also co-authored an educational music curriculum book for Alfred Publishing Co. called “Music For Fun,” used by teachers from kindergarten to second grade. His “Rhythm Band Set,” produced by Rhythm Band Instruments, is a Parent’s Choice Award winner.

Two other residents of the “street” making music at the front of the float with McGrath will be Olamide Faison who plays Miles, and walkaround Rosita who loves to play music and sing in both English and Spanish.

United under the traditional “Sesame Street” lamp post toward the back of the float are an international cast of “Sesame Street” characters representing may countries, including Elmo strumming a banjo; The Count, who like many musicians is also good at math; Halum from Bangladesh who enjoys playing the drum and laughing; Lola from Mexico, who is 4 years old and loves rhymes, songs and surprises; and Googly from India, who loves science and music.

All the characters will be playing their instruments along to “Sesame Street” songs from around the world. The characters in the rear will stand on top of an elevated colorful globe surrounded by a rainbow and musical notes, representing how music helps people and children of the world celebrate their diversity and unity.

The float will once again be designed by Studio Concepts, Inc., of Portland, Ore., and incorporates flowers such as light and dark dendrobium orchids, yellow roses, and carnation petals for Elmo’s fur, and even such edibles as peanuts, almonds, dried fruit, diced carrot and onion seed.

An interactive drum circle will be onboard, which has become a signature element of each year’s NAMM float reminding onlookers that everyone can make music. This year’s drum circle will invite parade viewers to jam along with “Sesame Street” songs.

“Research has proven that children’s social, verbal, reading and math skills are significantly improved by being involved in making music,” said Joe Lamond, president and CEO, NAMM. “NAMM’s float is designed to send the message that making music is an important component to every child’s overall growth and development, and is equally important for people of all ages and cultures as a wonderful form of expression and creativity.”

2008 will be NAMM’s fifth year as a float sponsor in the Tournament of Roses parade. In 2007, NAMM’s “Natural Harmonies: Oh Say Can You Sing,” won the Craftsman trophy for Exceptional Showmanship and Dramatic Impact for a float more than 55 feet long. In addition, NAMM’s 2006 float “Making Music is Magical,” designed with Disney’s Little Einstein characters, won the prestigious Grand Marshal’s trophy for excellence in creative concept and design; NAMM’s 2005 float with Sesame Workshop, “Music Makes Us a Family,” won the Bob Hope Humor trophy as the most comical and amusing float in the parade; and NAMM’s first-time entry in 2004 in partnership with Sesame Workshop won the Isabella Coleman Award for Color and Color Harmony through Floral Use.

Eleven talented and enthusiastic teens will demonstrate what "thriving" looks like as the official cast of Kaiser Permanente's 2007 Rose Parade® float, entitled "A Thriving Imagination." All 11 teens in the cast are Kaiser Permanente members and shining examples of Kaiser Permanente's successful efforts encouraging healthier living.

For example, five cast members are confronting childhood obesity and diabetes, both of which are growing epidemics nationwide. Those with diabetes carry insulin pens, pumps, and injections, enabling them to enable them to manage their diabetes while they manage to enjoy teen activities like cheerleading, soccer, and drama club, too. Two cast members successfully confronted the lifestyle factors that put them at risk for obesity, and along the way, helped their parents and siblings learn to savor salads and veggie stir-fry, along with the relaxation that regular exercise delivers.

"I can jump higher and move better now," said Kaiser Permanente member Edward Garcia, 13, who participated in Kaiser Permanente KIDS, a health-promotion program for overweight children. "At first I couldn't even do jumping jacks and sit-ups!" At the Rose Parade, a newly agile Edward will play Little Jack Horner in front of millions of parade viewers on national television.

Kaiser Permanente member Alexus Williams, 15, was diagnosed with diabetes as an infant, and underwent a leg amputation before her first birthday. With the help of a prosthetic leg and the lifelong care of her Kaiser Permanente pediatric endocrinologist, today Alexus participates in JROTC and drill team. She will portray Little Miss Muffett in the Rose Parade®.

The remaining six teens in the cast, with their individual accomplishments in cheerleading, dance, basketball, gymnastics, and long-distance running, are the thriving sons and daughters of Kaiser Permanente physicians and employees

PORT OF LOS ANGELES FLOATS ENTRY IN THE 2008 ROSE PARADE

Flotilla Marks Port’s First-Ever Appearance in the Parade

SAN PEDRO, Calif. — December 21, 2007 — The Port of Los Angeles makes its first entry into the Rose Parade on January 1, 2008 with a unique combination of six separate vessel floats celebrating the Port’s diverse operations with the theme “the place where the world comes together.”  The Port’s float is the official City of Los Angeles entry into the Rose Parade, marking the City’s 110th consecutive entry and earning it the title “longest-running float entrant in the parade.”

The Port’s float was created by veteran Rose Float designers Phoenix Decorating Company and was decorated by Port and City of Los Angeles employees, and other volunteer groups, over the past month.

The vessels creating the Port’s entry include:

The S.S. Los Angeles container ship, complete with electrical plug to highlight the Port’s commitment to clean operations and as the only place in the world where container ships “plug in” to electrical power while at dock.  The container ship float will be carrying Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Harbor Commission President S. David Freeman and Port Executive Director Geraldine Knatz.

The Love Boat cruise ship, celebrating the Port of Los Angeles Cruise Center as the home to the 1977-1986 television series and the west coast’s largest cruise port today, with more than 1 million passengers passing through each year.  This ship also sports an electrical plug as the Port of Los Angeles also prepares to “plug in” cruise ships in 2008.

LAFD Boat 2 fire boat, depicts the Port-based mega-fireboat, Warner Lawrence, the world’s largest, most powerful and technologically advanced fireboat in service at the Port of Los Angeles. The $9 million boat purchased in 2003 by the Port of Los Angeles can stream water more than 200 feet into the air and could fill up an average-sized swimming pool in 10 seconds.  This float will also stream some water as it carries Los Angeles Councilwoman Janice Hahn and Los Angeles City Fire Chief Douglas Barry.

Catch of the Day fishing boat, is a salute to the major commercial fishing and cannery operations that employed tens of thousands of people at the Port during the first half of the 20th century.  The local fishing fleet still operates today and brings in millions of pounds of squid, shrimp, shark, swordfish, lobster, rock cod, halibut, sardines and slime eel on an annual basis.  This float carries two Port of Los Angeles employees who were selected through a drawing: Stacy Allen, a 28-year employee who works in the Engineering Division, and Vanessa Guillen, a 3-year employee who works in the Marketing Division.

L.A. Port Police  SAFE™ (Secure Around Flotation Equipped) boat, represents the Port’s own dedicated police force of more than 120 officers. The Port Police SAFE™ boat is used to escort cargo and passenger vessels in and out of the Port, patrol 3,300 acres of water and transport the Dive Team during everyday Port Police operations.

Wilmington Tug” tug boat, is named after the original tug boat operator that served the Port of Los Angeles 100 years ago and pays homage to the vital work these small harbor craft perform every day.

NBC Continues Its 81-Year Tradition of Broadcasting Popular International Event

BURBANK, Calif. – December 12, 2007 – Al Roker, the weatherman and feature reporter for NBC's "Today," and Nancy O'Dell, co-anchor of the daily entertainment news magazine show "Access Hollywood," will reunite for the seventh year to co-host NBC's live, high-definition coverage of the "119th Tournament of Roses Parade" from Pasadena, California on Tuesday, January 1, 2008 (11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. ET).

This will be Roker's eleventh year hosting the popular annual event, and the ninth consecutive year for O'Dell. NBC has been broadcasting the New Year's Day parade for 81 years, beginning on radio in 1927 and then televising the event beginning in 1954.

Celebrated chef Emeril Lagasse is the Grand Marshall for this year's parade. With a 2008 theme of "Passport to the World's Celebrations," the parade will feature all the lavish floral floats, spectacular marching bands and high-stepping equestrian teams that have made the event the most popular New Year's Day celebration in the world.

Top bands from all over the country and as far away as Japan and El Salvador will perform, along with lively equestrian teams, including the United States Equestrian team featuring three riders who are Olympic Gold medallists.

This year's Rose Queen and her court will also appear, along with special guests on spectacular floats. All will pay tribute to numerous festivities from around the globe, including Mardi Gras, Oktoberfest, Day of the Dead, the Hawaiian Aloha festival and the 2008 Beijing Olympics, as well as wild western days and circuses. The Los Angeles Dodgers will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their move to Los Angeles with their first float in the parade, featuring riders that include Dodger legends like Tommy Lasorda and Steve Garvey.

The Pasadena police department estimates that at least 1 million spectators will line the five-and-a-half mile parade route. Tens of millions of people worldwide watch the telecast every year.

Arthur Forrest is the executive producer/director, Carol Kahl is the supervising producer, Tom Patino is the line producer and Stephanie Prescott is the coordinating producer for NBC Entertainment
